What Is the Federal Battery Rebate 2026 and Who Can Claim It?

The Australian Government introduced the Federal Battery Rebate to make battery storage more accessible for homes and businesses. Delivered as an upfront point-of-sale discount via Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs), eligible systems receive a discount of approximately 30%.

For 2026, the scheme delivers savings of around $252 per usable kWh for standard residential batteries.

With the average home battery size around 10kWh, that’s upfront savings of over

$ 0

For larger commercial or premium systems up to 50kWh, savings can exceed

$ 0

This is a game-changer for the economics of energy storage. For official updates, visit the Australian Government Energy Website.

Note: As of May 2026, the STC rebate value reduces every six months, and a tiered system applies for larger batteries. Getting in early ensures maximum savings!

Yes. The Cheaper Home Batteries Program officially began on July 1, 2025. If you install an eligible battery today, the discount is applied immediately to your upfront quote.

Yes. Starting May 1, 2026, the government introduced a tapering mechanism. The STC factor—and therefore the rebate amount—drops every six months. Waiting to install means you will receive a smaller discount.

The Federal Battery Rebate is an extension of the Small-scale Technology Certificate (STC) scheme. If you are installing a new solar and battery system together, you will generate STCs (and receive discounts) for both the solar panels and the battery, maximizing your upfront savings.

Commissioning is the final step where the battery is tested, signed off by an accredited electrician with a Certificate of Electrical Compliance, and formally switched on for operation.

A Virtual Power Plant (VPP) allows your battery to support the grid during peak times — and can generate additional income for you. Rebate-eligible batteries must be capable of joining a VPP, but your actual participation is completely optional.
